Building a casino in Lansing could be promising to Lansing students

Picture all Lansing public school students going to any college in Michigan, for four years, FREE!!! If the Kewadin Laning, comes to Lansing, that could be a possibility. Two percent of all the gaming revenue would go towards a scholarship for all Lansing public schools.
“I think it’s great that future graduates could possibly get a chance to go to school for free,” senior Tyler Brown.
Joe Eitrem, Sault St. Marie tribe chairmen and Mayor Virg Bernaro announced in a press conference on Monday, January 23rd that a casino (the Kewadin Lansing) would be a good thing for Lansing. It’d bring $600.000 from income taxes and $400 million in spin-off revenue. It’d create up to 2,200 union jobs including 700 in construction alone, card dealers, valet parking attendants, and other casino workers that would be paid between $12-24/hour.
“[The casino] is a good idea because it’ll bring more jobs to Lansing,” said senior Pedro Alviarez.
Despite all the good things the Kewadin could bring there are a few legal problems. One of the biggest concerns being, Lansing is not a reservation for any Michigan tribe. The federal law prohibits tribes from taking any land into trust for gaming.
Michigan could lose 22 million (or more) in gambling proceeds. Lansing has a deal with two other casinos, promising Lansing twenty two million dollars every year and in exchange, Lansing doesn’t have a casino. But if Lansing doesn’t hold up their end of the deal, why would the other casinos?
The Kewadin Lansing is going to cost $245 million dollars to build and is estimated to take up to three years before it’s complete. If this casino comes to Lansing, Lansing would be able to compete with Mt. Pleasant and Battle Creek casinos that draw residents of Lansing .
Another concern many people have is the crime rate, people believe the casino would increase the crime rate for various reasons but mayor Virg Bernero says he hasn’t seen any evidence that suggests building a casino downtown would increase crime. Lansing police chief Teresa Szymanski says she’s not sure because this she’s never dealt with situations involving casinos and she hasn’t done any research on it.
“People will fight over money, especially when they’ve been drinking so the casino could possibly raise the crime rate but who knows,” said senior Martell Wade “but it people could act right Lansing could make a lot of money.

Get fit with your gaming system

Summer is coming and you want to look good! But, leaving the house every day to go to a gym and work out can get a little repetitive. Why leave the comfort of your own home when you can simply turn on your entertainment system and work out better then you could at any gym? According to IGN.com, with games like Zumba Fitness Party for Playstation 3, you can expect nothing more than a full workout. Making the systems more interactive will influence the gamer even more, making it a full out workout in your living room.
“Working out while playing a video game.. they must never want me to leave my house,” said senior Stephanie Dunham.
Dunham said she uses an Xbox 360 Kinect and likes Micheal Jackson: The Experience.
“[It's] probably the best workout you can get, with all the moves and intense party modes,” said Dunham. What about that gym again?
Thanks to an article from Slate.com it states that all kids shouldn’t play over 2 hours of video games a day with only an hour of that being used for the internet. Since the 1980’s, screen play has contributed to a tripling in the rate of obesity, but industries now have found a way to counter the negative preception about gaming.
“I may not get out as much, but with my Wii Fit yoga I have the time of my life in my game room,” said Freshman Austin Buzzo. “I don’t really like gaming all that much, but who can resist the temptation of playing sports games interactively with your family?”
Going to a gym is not a bad thing at all, but with parents having to do a lot in today’s busy world it makes it a lot simpler to just make away with simply pressing a button.
There’s nothing new about working out in front of your TV, but now it’s all about being able to interact and move with your set and game console. Before, it was a matter of watching another person do a work out and you repeating it. Now, people are looking for something easy, simple and stylish.
Eating right and exercise is something that these gaming companies know, and with all the new gaming there are ways to track and monitor your diet. Games like Zumba tracks progress in both eating and exercise habits, encouraging more than a gym or diet plan could. Although gaming is a good way to exercise, nothing is better than first-hand experience so don’t forget about the outdoors.

Kindle Fire’s for all Everett students

Come September, students could be headed to class with a very different kind of textbook. If the trials go well, all students will be using Kindle Fires or Asus tablets instead of textbooks. This spring, Mary Bahl, Everett’s specialized media technician, hopes to have a pilot program in two classes to decide which option is better, Kindle Fires or Asus tablets and if this plan will be in effect soon.
“Then we hope to have the Kindles or tablets in place when school starts in the fall,” said Bahl. “Students will have the same one the following year; freshmen will have the same one all four years.”
Many students and staff are wondering how and why this sudden supply of resources came about.
“It all started with the need of books. Cousins said that in lieu of books, we should have Kindles,” said Bahl.
Students have a list of other things they think should be a higher priority than Kindles.
“We don’t even know how to take care of our school. We don’t need Kindles,” said senior Taylor Deberry.
Library media specialist Renee Lyons sees the new technology as beneficial and versatile.
“I’m getting used to mine and I see many advantages. I am certainly an advocate for it,” said Lyons.
Many of the books in Everett High School are ten years old or older. With the Kindles, all the information will be updated.
“Classes will be able to connect globally to subject areas. Everyone will become the teacher,” said assistant principal Carl Word.
The Kindle Fires are equipped with WiFi, access 19 million movies, TV shows, songs, magazines, and books, apps, and a vibrant color touchscreen. According to Bahl, this specific Kindle was chosen because of the color screen. In order for students to get a full effect in math and science classes, students will need color graphics.
“The science department will be able to use graphs and charts; [it could] possibly help with the MME,” said science teacher Stephanie Robinson.
However, there are still many worries from other staff members. The idea of theft and the safety of the Kindles is a big issue.
“I think it’s a great concept but a bad idea because of security and accountability,” said public safety officer Curtis Couthen.
To reduce the possibility of breaking, Bahl has looked into cases with straps to wear across the body so that students are less apt to drop them.
“There are always downfalls with technology. They could be lost, dropped, or stolen,” said Bahl. “We are also thinking of insurance for students.”
There are also financial benefits to this plan and in the long run, the school will save money. One ebook can be downloaded on six different devices instead of buying textbooks for six students.
“The premise behind it is they’re cost effective. The school will not have to replace them every year like books,” said Couthen.
Many staff members are still worried about the change and the financial aspect.
“We don’t have the money for upkeep when they break,” said English teacher Robin Elliot. “Technology can’t always replace books.”
Administrators still have worries about the safety of the Kindles. Word says the Kindles will have to become a part of Everett’s culture.
“If you don’t educate people on how they are to be used and who’s accountable, it will be a waste of money,” said Word.
The apps that could be downloaded on the Kindle are endless, such as, Facebook, Netflix, and Pandora. This has some staff concerned.
“It could be a distraction with inappropriate apps and games,” said accounting teacher Gregory Clugston.
Bahl says that the students won’t be able to go to Amazon and download apps, but they can go to most websites. However, there are many other benefits about the Kindles.
According to staff, the Kindles would be an excellent resource for ESL students and students that are partially deaf or blind.
“The Kindles are text-to-speech enabled and can read to them. This is a major plus for ESL students,” said Bahl. “And hearing impaired students will have everything right in front of them.”
Details are still being worked out, but if Bahl has her way the Kindles will be in effect next fall.

There are many classes at Everett high school, but one class people don’t know that much about is Graphic Print and Technology. Graphic Print and Technology is a class where students get to make things like T-shirts, hoodies, coffee cups, key chains, stickers, and many more things. It’s class where the teachers show you what you’re doing and how to work the machines and then you create what you want.
” [It's] a class to make students more aware of the career choices in the graphic industry. Students are given hands on assignments, making things for themselves,” said Graphic Print and Technology teacher Dennis Harrington.
Students get to show off their creativity and talent; once they are given the assignment, everything after that is up to them.
“If you’re very creative, you will like this class because you can get use all of your creativity,” said senior Kortnee Richardson.
Anyone can get stuff made. All they have to do is come down to the classroom, talk to the teacher about what they want, and give them the money. Students in the class make things for some of the students when the teachers can’t do them or just to give the student some more experience. This is a good place to get things for open houses made.
” [For students] I have made things for their open houses, like banners and invitations,” said teacher assistant Mike McCullough.
Graphic Print and Technology does a lot of things for the school. When a teacher needs something made they come to the class.When the class advisers want something to be made like a T-shirt they can come to the class. So pretty much if you want it, they can do it… as long as its school-appropriate.
“We have made banners for the quiz bowl Team, banners for Sexton state championship, school play shirts, shirts [for] every club at all three high schools, and many more things,” said Harrington.
This class does a lot of things for all three high schools, since the students for all the high school are able to take this class. It’s a three-hour class and there’s always something to do.
“I would recommend this class because you can do a lot of interesting things,” said senior Deshawn Qawwee.
Graphic Print and Technology is a three-credit class, which means students take it for either the entire morning or afternoon. This means it generally would only be available to juniors or seniors, and to students who do not need to retake classes they need for graduation.
“It’s a Career Technical Education (CTE) class. CTE classes are always 3 hours,” said McCullough.

The Hunger Games makes a huge profit

On March 23, the widely-anticipated movie The Hunger Games hit theaters. A lot of people have read the books and could not wait for the movie. Everyone was excited to see it. Before the movie even hit theaters, they were selling tickets to the midnight showings.
According to MTV.com, The Hunger Games made $155 Million Dollars in its opening weekend.
The only movies to make more money during their opening weekends were, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two and The Dark Knight.
“The record opening [of The Hunger Games] was driven by the loyal fan base, which is humongous, along with a carefully crafted marketing push that intrigued them and also drew in new audiences in time for the movie’s release,” said Gitesh Pandya of Box Office Guru. “It was a precise combination of those key factors that led to such an explosive opening weekend.”
Many students at Everett read all the books and were excited for the movie. Some even went to see the very first showing at midnight.
“It was exciting to see the midnight showing; I read the books about a year ago and wanted to see the movie ever since,” said sophomore Sonrisa Diamond. “I like that I was one of the first people who got to see it.”
A lot of people said the loved the movie and want to see it again. It was that good.
“I would definitely see it again, I’m hoping to buy it when it comes on DVD,” said Diamond.
Many have said both the book and movie are great. The story in the book follows pretty closely to the story in the movie.
Even after three weeks of the movie being released, it’s still going strong. So far, The Hunger Games has made over $300 Million dollars at the box office.

Acme Designer Shoe project in Mr. Konietzko’s class

Around this time every year the students in Lothar Konietzko’s Economics class participate in a project called Acme Designer Shoes. In this project they are given a layout of a shoe or they may choose one from the internet it they like. This shoe project displays how sole proprietorship (working in a group) works and what it consists of. In the process of designing the shoe, the students must choose a logo, the pricing, business partners, the manufacturer, and also financing. In the group they must choose one shoe to market to the venture capitalist ( JA reps, Tico Duckett or TJ) they will then chose a design that could potentially market and make a lot of money. Like a shark tank theory choosing the best product to make a huge profit. Students thought that it made a unique project.
“I though it was very creative,” said junior Amoni Brown.
Many students said they though that it was a great experience.
“I though that the shoe project was very creative and gave us [students] a chance to show how we think outside the box,” said junior Raquel Jimenez. “It was a great experience to learn how to build up the shoe business, it was great,” said junior Taven Tuslca.
Other students thought that it challenged their minds.
“It forces you to think like in the business world,” said junior Morgan White-Villanueva.
For some, the project was a chance to put what they learned to work in a unique way.
“I thought that it was fun I liked making my own shoe,” said junior Emerald Martin. “It also was fun to draw instead of writing for a change.”
Students are put into groups randomly, in order to mimic real-world situations where you aren’t allowed to choose group members.
“I liked the lesson being hands on,” said Konietzko.
The movie “Just For Kicks,” which talks about the shoe industry, is shown to the class before they begin.
Konietzko said that the movie is what sparked the idea for the project.
“The lesson was first developed [because of] the movie; it is one of my favorite projects during the school year,” said Konietzko.

Jacob Venable accepts full ride scholarship

Senior year is full of decisions, a big one being what college to go to and how on earth to pay for it. But senior Jacob Venable, Everett High School’s football kicker has nothing to worry about; he has accepted a full ride scholarship.
Venable’s college search started a couple months ago, when he was offered five scholarships from different schools such as; Albion, Adrian, Olivet, Sienna Heights and Alma. Constantly missing school during that time period because of college tours, the stress level was high and the decision was not easy. In the end, Venable verbally committed to Sienna Heights University February 17 with a full ride scholarship, half academic and half football.
Venable has always been an athlete, before football he had been active in soccer since the age of four. Although he picked football as his high school sport he still plays soccer when he can, on an indoor team. Though he has been successful at football, Venable said an earlier start could have made him even better.
“I wish I would have started when I was younger,” says Venable.
Many teens would love to be professional athletes, but for Venable football is a way to help him toward his main goal and focus: his education. To him that is the most important thing.
“[The]decision[to go pro] is four y ears down the road though. I need to focus on today[and my education].”
Although he didn’t start at a young age, he has done well for just playing three years. Venable practices kicking for about two hours straight when the season is approaching and during. He also lifts and is currently training, even while off-season.
Venable is very lucky but to have these kinds of opportunities offered to you is not easy, he said.
“[Jake has]good work ethics he went to alot of good camps, he worked hard this past summer. He will be a good college kicker as long as he continues the work he’ll be fine.” said, Mr. Carruthers Football Coach.
Not only do you have to be a good player and determined in the sport but also on your education.
“Keep your grades up. You can be the best athlete in the world, but without the grades you wont get anywhere,” said Venable.
Venable said that many teens are careless about their grades until they get to their senior year and realize how important they are. If you’re an athlete that’s the advice Venable gives to you: athlete or not, grades are important.
Since his sophomore year Venable has been the only kicker for Everett’s football team, therefore next year it’s leaving Everett with no kicker, as of now who will replace him? Nonetheless, this summer Venable will be coaching two other Everett students; sophomore Juan Ramirez and Freshmen Cameron Goedert. Which means next Years football team will have two kickers, they were chosen from the coaches and will be coached by Venable.
“No[I don't want to go pro], it just seem like a good experience [and] fun [but yeah I'm nervous] because I’ve never kicked a football before” said, Ramirez when asked about his new sport decision, seeing how he normally just place on the high schools soccer team.
Both of the students must have been chosen for a reason, they’ll stay and continue in the high school sport but Venable will be moving on to bigger things.
“Continue to follow his dreams, improve the work ethics and get a fine life.” is Mr. Carruthers advice to Venable.

Senior class’s lack of fundraising

On May 11th, Everett seniors will get preview of America’s “Sin City”, Las Vegas. Seniors chose to celebrate prom at Eagle Eye in Bath, Michigan. However, none of this comes without a price. Have you noticed the display of baked goods and candy after school every Wednesday and Thursday? Maybe you stopped and bought a couple cupcakes, but do you know where the money’s going and who made the cupcakes? The senior class is responsible for this weekly fundraising in an effort to raise money for prom. Some seniors are under the impression that if they don’t raise money, there won’t be a prom; however, that is not the case.
“Regardless, we have enough money, but the more we raise, the lower the cost is for tickets,” said assistant adviser Charles Hameline.
The lack of participation from the seniors may cause them to be paying a large amount for prom tickets.
“I’m disappointed that they don’t see the importance of working as a team,” said Hameline.
According to class president Raven Odom and treasurer Amanda Robertson, there are only four seniors who continually help fundraiser, two officers (themselves) and two other seniors. Towards the beginning of the year, there was a senior class meeting about fundraising and possibly a senior trip.
“The senior trip most likely won’t happen. It’s not a priority because of lack of finances,” said Robertson.
Odom would like to see the price of prom tickets around $35. The senior class is planning more fundraisers soon including the talent show, fashion show, and Fazoli’s coupons. However, this won’t bring the cost of prom tickets down as much as they wanted.
“Tickets will be around $50 because we have a lack of support from the senior class,” said Odom.
So far they have raised several thousand. Their candle fundraiser in the beginning of the year raised the most money, but not enough. So far the seniors have paid the down payment for the room and decorations
“The main thing is food and decorations,” said Odom.
