According to The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, “grief” is “intense mental anguish; deep remorse, acute sorrow.”

Many people think that grief only applies when someone close to you has died, but it can also apply when a close friend moves away, when a boyfriend/girlfriend breaks up with you, or when you’re just going down a really rough path.

There are five stages to grief, according to psychcentral.com. Many people know the first phase is denial, because they heard it in a movie or their friends used it as a joke, but many people aren’t familiar with the other four.1. Denial and Isolation

This first reaction is a defense mechanism that buffers the immediate shock. We block out the words and hide from the facts. This is a temporary response that carries us through the first wave of pain.2. Anger

As the masking effects of denial and isolation begin to wear, reality and its pain re-emerge. We are not ready. The intense emotion is deflected from our vulnerable core, redirected and expressed instead as anger. Anger may be directed to the person we are grieving over. Though we may know he/she isn’t the one to blame, our misplaced emotions cause us to resent the person for causing us pain or for leaving us. We feel guilty for being angry, and this makes us more angry.3. Bargaining

The normal reaction to feelings of helplessness and vulnerability is often a need to regain control. This can present itself in feelings like:

If only I had spent more time with him/her…

I should treated them better…

Maybe we can still work it out …

Secretly, we may make a deal with God or our higher power in an attempt to postpone the inevitable. Psychcentral calls this a weaker line of defense to protect us from the painful reality.4. Depression

There are two types of depression when it comes to grief. The first one is public, dealing with the reality of what happened, realizing that daily routines (like meeting a friend after school or calling your boyfriend/girlfriend) have changed. Some may have to figure out how to react with an ex still in school or classes. This phase is can be helped by making a clear plan when you have a clear head, so you know how to face the situation. The second type of depression is more private. This part prepares us to separate ourselves from the person we cared so much about. That can mean trying to understand how our lives can go on without a loved one. During this step we usually need someone to talk to, or a hug.5. Acceptance

This step pretty much speaks for itself, but unfortunately not everyone reaches this stage. Some may not get beyond anger or denial. You may not immediately feel better, but acceptance is a big step in the process and should not be confused with depression.

Let it be known that all these phases are completely normal and in order to help get through it you might talk to a friend, a parent, or your counselor

“If it is a crisis, [counselors] are available at any time,” said counselor Erin Falsetta. “What they’re feeling is normal and what they’re going through is a hard and trying time. Things are going to get better, but it’s a slow process.”

Some seniors feels strongly that juniors should come to prom; some seniors are dating juniors. Even if the majority of the class voted for an all-senior prom, juniors who are invited are going to be there no matter what.

Next to graduation, prom is one of the most important events to seniors. It’s what you make it; if you make it lame, it’s going to be lame. Prom is one of the last things we’re going to do as a class together, so you make it how you want it to be. Most people want prom to be a special night that they spend with friends, and some seniors only hang out with juniors. They have every right to have their friends at prom.

Prom is a major event, and it shouldn’t matter who is or isn’t there. Seniors should be able to spend it how they want, rather it be on the dance floor with a pretty dress or tux, with or without a date, with or without the juniors. The only thing that really matters is how much fun you have. If juniors coming to prom means you’re not going to have fun, don’t ruin it for other people… just don’t come.

Relationships can hurt you physically, verbally, emotionally, and mentally. Many people hold back the causes of their relationship because they feel that they need to be with that person. If you have to ask yourself or doubt why that person is there, then they shouldn’t be.
In a relationship there are many characteristics you can describe such as: trust, honesty, loyalty, communication, and friendship.

There are two big problems in all relationships and of them is ALL trust. I’ve personally been in a few relationships that made me feel very vulnerable. Both of which come with a lot risks. If you can feel and express trust, you’ll also feel safe. When I talk about trust, I don’t mean putting your trust in others; you need to be able to trust yourself, which might be difficult if your past relationships haven’t been fulfilling.

Always be honest with your partner; sometimes the truth hurts, but hiding it only makes it worse. If your past relationships were causing you to bite your tongue because you thought saying what was on your mind might create problems for your relationship, it will be tough to start speaking the truth unconditionally. But the only way to build trust between you and your partner is to speak honestly. If there is not any trust you have nothing.

The second biggest is abuse. The first step in getting out of an abusive relationship is to realize that you have the right to be treated with respect and not be physically or emotionally harmed by another person. If you feel that you love someone but often feel afraid, it’s time to get out of the relationship, fast. You’re worth being treated with respect and you can get help.

If your partner demands you to wear specific clothing, hairstyles, which to hang with, location, etc. Avoid isolating yourself from your friends and family. You might feel like you have nowhere to turn, or you might be embarrassed about what’s been going on, but this is when you need support most. People like counselors, doctors, teachers, coaches, and friends will want to help you, so let them.

If this story describes you please don’t be alarmed, get help. You can call the Willow Health Center at (517) 702-3500.

Remember YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

School is one of the places you can and should be able to express yourself the most, having your true friends with you every step of the way. But how much fun can you have at school without expressing yourself? This year, crackdowns related to homecoming, Halloween, and even cell phones are making Everett feel more like a prison than a place to enjoy your high school years.

When it’s Halloween, students want to wear costumes, and when it’s summer they want to wear shorts. Clothes are a way we express ourselves. School is not all about work, you should have fun at school. This year, it seems like there’s nothing fun to do. Many kids work a lot better with music, but we can’t use IPods, mp3 players or any electronic device as we work. Young men are not allowed to wear hats of any sort, including snap backs, winter hats, or fitted hats.

Rules are important. Without rules, a school would quickly get out of control. But Everett is going overboard, making our time here almost dreadful. You think about High school, and you think about the fun you had, not the rules you followed!

If Everett is going to impose strict rules on phones and dress, there needs to be a chance for kids to break those rules now and again. Halloween was one of those chances. Let kids have fun, let their hair down for a day. Then, they won’t feel so upset that Everett is so strict other days.

Pep rallies are another chance for kids to have fun. Let them have fun, within reason. Bring back performances. Bring back class contests. Give students the chance to show everyone what they love to do, let the students get competitive.

What is your ideal vacation? Going to the beach, tanning, and swimming? Or perhaps seeing a Broadway play or a new movie? Maybe dining at a five star restaurant? It is kind of hard to do it all at once… but not if you go on a cruise.

When you first hear the word “cruise,” you may think “expensive.” It isn’t cheap, but all the things you can do on a cruise; dining, entertainment, etc. are all included in the original price of the cruise. The only thing that is extra would be spending money for souvenirs.

The cruise I recommend going on would be a Disney Cruise. I went on the Disney Dream, Disney’s newest cruise ship. The ship is 1,115 ft long (that is about 52ft longer then the Eiffel Tower is tall!).

There are lots of things to do on the Disney Dream, including kid entertainment such as Goofy’s mini golf course, basketball courts and Virtual Sports Simulators. Another thing to do is to go and catch a movie at the Buena Vista Theatre. The Theatre shows first- run movies, some movies even being shows in Disney 3-D. There are plenty of snacks to eat during the movie, just head to the prelude station located right outside the theatre. If you’re not feeling up to a movie, you could go to Deck 3 and go to the Walt Disney Theatre, a theatre which has live musical performances such as “The Golden Mickeys,” a show that features a collage of older Disney movies and Disney Villains, show casting Disney’s favorite villain, and on the last night there is a showing of Believe, a farewell show. You can enjoy all of these things countless amounts of times because they are all free. On one night, everyone is invited to “The Pirates In The Caribbean” party on Deck 11. There, you can dress up as pirates and enjoy a special appearance by Captain Jack Sparrow. Unlike any other cruise line, Disney is the first to have a private showing of fireworks out at sea. Some of the best fireworks Disney has to offer I think.

Disney offers one of a kind dining experience you have the chance to dine at restaurants such as the Enchanted Garden, Royal Palace, and Animators Palate. The only thing that is weird is that you have three servers. What is cool though is they rotate with you. What I mean is, through out your stay, you dine at the three restaurants (Enchanted Garden, Royal Palace, and Animators Palate) but you do not get new servers every time you visit another restaurant, the three servers you started out with attend to you the rest of your stay at the different restaurants. That is something you would not get on another cruise line. If you don’t like the food you ordered, or after dinner you are still hungry, you could always go to Deck 11 and grab something from Flo’s café or Luigi’s Pizza, or even desserts at Eye Scream Frozen Treats. It is free and unlimited after all.

Tell me about specific things to do, how a Disney cruise is different than other cruises. Can you compare it to other vacations you’ve been on?

http://www.talkdisney.com/maps/DisneyDreamDeckPlan.jpg

alive on the walls and interact with guests. Hands down the best meal, though, was at Remy, the adults-only French restaurant that features seven courses. It’s an additional fee ($99 per person), but well worth the experience. Tip: Spring for Remy — it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience

The office had suspended lots of kids or having problems with teachers, but sometimes it is not always the students fault. Teachers have their attitudes some days .

For instance teachers believe that the students show no respect. They think that students curse and have out burst for no reason, also that students talk to them like they are just another student. But I have been in a class where the teacher will just snap on a student just for getting up and getting some paper. Also I have seen teachers act worse than the students ,by acting childish and rude but the student can not react because they will in the end get in trouble.

I have also seen a teacher pick on a certain student because they know or think that they are a trouble maker. The teacher will only tell them to be quiet in reality the whole class is talking and acting up. Teachers just don’t wanna admit their wrong sometimes and if a student points out that they are wrong they will get in trouble for that too. The teacher will just keep pushing them until they end up leaving class. Teachers should give everyone a fair first impression instead of making up their mind about a student because of what they think.

Students can be rude and disrespectful and some teachers only know how to deal with it one way and that’s by acting the same back. But at the end of the day they are the adults and should act like it even if a student is misbehaving. They should set the example. But by them catching attitudes too and being ruder only makes the situation worse and doesn’t help the student to realize what they are doing is wrong.

Maybe if students and teacher can come together and actually have a good understanding of student teacher respect then class and school overall could be alot easier. But how things are now teachers need to step up and not be so childish sometimes and set examples for the students who don’t know any better.

Out in front of Everett High School, there is the usual sign announcing the name of the school and sometimes important dates for events and other goings on.
Out in front of Everett High School, there is the usual sign announcing the name of the school and sometimes important dates for events and other goings on. The sign reads ‘Everett High School, Visual and Performing Arts Magnet Academy’. That title seems to fit the school, right? But wait, a visual and performing arts magnet academy with no dance teacher, subpar arts classes, and no focus on the visual and performing arts in every day curriculum? It doesn’t sound like an arts magnet academy, and upon closer inspection, isn’t one at all.

Some years ago, Everett applied to be a magnet school for the arts. The school promised to vamp up its arts classes and turn its every day curriculum towards performing and visual arts such as studying the arts throughout history. Everett got the money and the title of magnet school, but instead of holding true to its promises, did nothing within its curriculum to justify its new title. The magnet money the school received went towards many things, such as lights for the auditorium, new instruments for the music department, software for photoshop classes, and concert uniforms for the band. Unfortunately, the new things the school got years ago are no longer relevant. The lights for the auditorium didn’t help better any classes and despite having nice lights the auditorium is still falling apart, the instruments for the music department are now in desperate need of repair, the photoshop software is now outdated, and the concert uniforms are no longer in style. As a whole, the performing and visual arts classes are currently not anywhere near the standards a magnet school should hold itself to.

As a performing arts magnet, dance is naturally an area of interest and importance to many students. There are a few different levels of dance offered at Everett, from beginners to company, but at this point the level a student is put in doesn’t matter seeing as the class has no dance teacher. For the past marking period it’s been substitutes. How can a performing arts magnet not get it together enough to hire a dance teacher for its students? The company class is left creating dances themselves, and who knows what the beginner classes are doing every school day. It’s absolutely ridiculous that students coming to a performing arts school are left disappointed. But the dance program is not the only one at a loss.

The theater program at Everett is just sad. The fall play for the past two years has been little kid shows like Hansel and Gretel, and Sleeping Beauty. The plays at a performing arts school should be ones that the actors and students enjoy doing and seeing, not shows meant for elementary school children. This year’s Sleeping Beauty isn’t even going to be performed in our performing arts magnet auditorium; it is traveling to other elementary schools and being performed at a storefront theater in Frandor, where we will share half the profits with Mid-Michigan Family Theater. Both of these changes are in hopes of raising more money to spend on the spring musical, making the fall show more like a fundraiser than a production; less elementary schools would come because of the prices of buses, but the school will be sharing profits when it could host the show in its own auditorium and keep all of the money made. As for the spring musicals, yes the theater head Mr. Allen has done a beautiful job bringing in outside directors and actors to grace our auditorium with their expertise, but that’s just it. A performing arts magnet school should not have to bring in outside talent to put together a functioning show, it should be teaching and encouraging students to create wonderful shows using their own talent and skills.

Teachers and administrators may point out that as a performing arts magnet, our band and orchestra programs are wonderful and every bit at the level of a magnet school. But if these programs are so valued, why is funding for them continually being cut? If budget cuts continue to wreak havoc on our performing arts programs, soon there will be nothing left of them and the school will be forced to stop calling itself a “visual and performing arts magnet academy”.

Everett High School is nowhere near the level it needs to be to call itself a performing and visual arts magnet school. The dance program has no teacher, the theater program is lacking, and funding is continually being cut for the only programs deserving of the title. Everett either needs to better its visual and performing arts classes until they’re worthy being in a magnet school, or get rid of the title altogether.

When the bell rings at the end of each class, students rush out the doors like a stampede of buffaloes. The hallways are filled in less than a second and you have to push just to move forward five steps. On the first day of school many returning students were surprised to see so many new students walking the halls of Everett High School. Every day, it’s a struggle to walk through the halls to get to each class because of the amount of students that are trying to ...

When the bell rings at the end of each class, students rush out the doors like a stampede of buffaloes. The hallways are filled in less than a second and you have to push just to move forward five steps. On the first day of school many returning students were surprised to see so many new students walking the halls of Everett High School. Every day, it’s a struggle to walk through the halls to get to each class because of the amount of students that are trying to get from place to place. The question is, is Everett becoming overcrowded?

Here at Everett there are 522 freshman, 358 sophomores, 296 juniors and 195 seniors. That’s over 1,300 students walking the halls every day.

“Middle school was so much easier to get through the hallways. Now that I’m here its so hard to even move steps without bumping into anybody,” said freshman Tyler Lee.

For the past five weeks, new students have been walking into already overcrowded classes and are expecting to have their own desk and everything. Some students have no choice but to sit in a chair in the back of the room. Due to budget cuts, classes and teachers have been cut, and counselors have no choice but to fill each classroom with as many students as possible.

Math teacher Bethann Barron, who has 39 students in her first hour, says that she can handle all of the students when it comes to behavior but its still hard to manage having so many students in one class.

“Behavior isn’t a issue in my classes… but it’s really hard when 20 students ask questions at the same time,” said Ms. Barron.

With so many students walking the halls each day, tardies may increase, especially if you have to go from one end of the building to the other. Some students feel the need to stand in the middle of the hallways while others are trying to be on time to class.

“I’ve been tardy a couple times this year already because of the amount of kids in the hallway,” said sophomore Thaila Veloz. “The hallways are such a mess during passing time”

Fights and arguments can be a result of the over crowed hallways and classrooms. If someone is in the way, instead of saying “excuse me,” pushing and shoving is the way students are getting through the hallways.

The only way students can deal with the hallways is by finding a new route to class that has less traffic jams and more open spaces to walk, but there is no definite solution to the crowded and overflowed classrooms, we just have to be patient and hope that by second semester, Everett will have more teachers and more classes available for students.

In Everett high school lunches are one of those things that some students like, and some students don’t. It may be the taste, or how it looks. Either way, the real question is: what is in it and is it healthy? The lunches aren’t that bad if you just take the time to try it instead of just saying “I don’t like it.” There’s more to it than just saying “that’s gross” or “I’m not eating that.” It takes you actually trying it. Because it looks bad, doesn’t mean ...

Because it looks bad, doesn’t mean that it tastes that way.

You can’t judge how something tastes just by what people say. Sometimes the food may look horrible, but that is the food that may taste the best. For example, some students said the burrito tastes good, but you might not know it just to look at it.

Now, just because you find some food that is tasty, doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

“A lot of foods in the cafeteria [may seem healthy], but [they] may not be,” said athletic director and science teacher Cindy Short.

This year, all students get free lunch due to a federal grant. This means that taxpayers are funding the food that students are being given. Taxpayers would probably like to know that the food they’re buying is healthy for America’s children. According to a University of Michigan survey, food choice is important. In the study of 1,300 students they found that those who ate school lunches were on the average more obese, and consumed a higher amount of “bad” cholesterol.

The school district might dispute that finding. According to the school district’s food and nutrition page on their website, the food in Lansing is “healthier” than it has been in previous years. Some still say that having the new choices is little change because of the high fat content still remaining in the food.

The lunchroom at Everett is filled with choices. Students can eat healthy if they want to. Students can find food that is tasty if they are open to trying new things. And anyone upset about the lack of choices should get involved and reach out everyone has a voice use it, don’t just sit and complain. Let your voice be heard.
