As of today, texting while driving is illegal in 22 states and that number keeps growing. This new law was first proposed when texting and driving became an issue, for especially teen drivers.

After a year filled with after-school work sessions, stressful deadlines, and dedicated teamwork, the Viking Voice staff got to see their work rewarded last month.
On May 30, the staff attended the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA) spring awards conference. This year, the paper received nine individual awards, a Spartan award for online newspaper, and a silver award for the print edition.
“I am so proud of my staff,” said newspaper adviser Chad Sanders. “This is the most awards we’ve ever taken home. These guys rock.”

While most students were counting down the minutes to freedom the week before spring break, 50 of our Everett students were walking the streets of New York City.
Every year the social studies department puts together a field trip for students last year, they traveled to Washington DC.

In December 2009, while everyone else celebrated Christmas Eve or was making preparations for Christmas Day, Everett Registrar Isabella Rowan was packing her bags for her 12-hour flight to Egypt.
On Christmas morning, Rowan left for her flight to Cairo, Egypt where she participated in the Gaza Freedom March.

Over the years, Everett has made drastic changes in their policies within the building because of lack of discipline within the student body.
Changes are being made to tardy policies through hall sweeps, the lunchroom policy becoming stricter so that people are not allowed to leave and now the possibility of not having pep rallies next year is being proposed due to the lack of respect between groups of people.

On Wednesday, March 17, students from the Everett Performing Arts Department performed a Broadway musical, the school edition of Rent. This uplifting performance is based on a story of friends and their modern life in New York City, filled with obstacles and struggles they face in their everyday lives.
Senior Patrick Foster played Tom Collins, a center stage character who deals with his homosexuality while battling with AIDS.
“[Rent] is a story based on life battles in drugs, death, and in the end a falling moment of love,” said Foster.

On January 12, 2010, a tremendous earthquake hit Haiti leaving thousands dead and many more homeless. It was not long before the world started to come to their aid by delivering food and supplies to help the survivors.
Everett High School responded, like other schools in the area, by having a peanut butter drive to collect jars of the creamy and nutritious treat and other items crucial to the survival of people in Haiti—and local radio station 97.5FM decided to help students out with the idea.

Everett High School has had the opportunity to have exchange students come from all over the world. Two of the most recent guests are from Germany.
German exchange students junior Isabel Knapp and junior Patrick Feth arrived just this year.
“I’ve taken the opportunity of coming here as a big deal,” said Feth. “It was something I’ve always looked forward to.”
They both enjoy spending time in after-school activities and would like to try out for sports in the spring.

The student population at Everett is nearly 1,500 students. Records show that the student body is made up of 47.6 percent African American, 28.6 percent Caucasian, 15.4 percent Hispanic, 7.7 percent Asian and .7 percent Native American. Everett has a higher amount of diversity than other school in the area.
According to English as a Second Language (ESL) support specialist Oralia Contreras, Everett has students from 34 different countries, and there are a total of 24 different languages spoken by students.

Two big events that students can look forward to are just around the corner. No one will want to miss these events, so be sure to mark these dates on a calendar.
First, the third annual comedy showcase, the Everett LOL-a-thon, will also be held on April 28. The event will be held in the small auditorium from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $3 at the door. The LOL-a-thon is a fund-raiser hosted by The Viking Voice staff to raise money to print monthly issues of the newspaper.
