The internet is an addicting source especially for young teens and kids. What makes the internet so addicting? The internet may be addicting to most kids due to it being very entertaining and a way to escape troubles in life. But once you get on the internet it seems like you can’t get off.
Most people think the media and internet can be bad for you, but the internet can affect you both ways.
“Social media can increase happiness and nurture your social circle. But depending on who you are, social media can potentially also make you unhappy and more isolated,” said University of Oslo’s Hilde Holsten, on the website Phys.org. Holsten said that the internet influences people, and mostly in a bad way.
“[The] Internet mostly [has] negative impacts on social life and well-being,” said Holsten.
Most schools try to make sure that students keep their phones put away during school because it’s a distraction to kids. On the website familyeducation.com, it was stated that 65% of students bring their phones to school.
Some students think that the internet can be useful and helpful.
“I think the internet is a good technology for communicating with your family, friends, or lovers; it’s also a good way to know what’s going on in the world especially in your area,” said sophomore Steven Nguyen.
While there’s students like Nguyen who think their internet is a good source, there’s also students who find the internet to be alarming.
“There’s bad sides like internet trolls, racist politics, and other gruesome disturbing things,” said sophomore Je’Layjeah Houston.
In this generation there’s a lot of students and people who are way too attached to the internet. With being too attached with the internet, there can be many side effects of being an internet addict like depression, isolation, and dishonesty. Dishonesty can be a side effect from the internet because once students get on the internet they feel the need to lie to make themselves feel better or make others feel bad but lying about things.
Ever since quarantine has started, students have been stuck inside the house and the attachment to the internet has been even more severe.
“The moment I realized I was too attached to the internet was when the internet went out at 2am on a school night and I was still playing on my phone, so it made me mad,” said junior Nancy Tran.
Instead of going on the internet, there’s other things you can do especially with the good weather Michigan has been receiving. Go out on a walk, run, bike, play some sports, have a picnic, go watch the sunset with friends, go out to eat, paint, draw, and do homework. The internet is a tool for schoolwork and entertainment, but experts agree that too much of it can have negative effects on a person’s health.
“I try to get away from the internet by going to sleep, playing soccer or exercising,” said senior Juan Nonato-Rebello.
