Thrift shopping: it’s not as bad as it seems!

Thrift stores have a bad reputation and there are plenty of reasons why people avoid shopping at a store that sells used clothing, but do people actually know what thrift shopping is all about? People think that just because it’s used clothing that it isn’t good clothing, and  that’s the kind of mindset that needs to stop.

There are many good qualities about thrift shopping, such as being able to find a whole new wardrobe without spending hundreds of dollars, having more of a variety to choose from, or being on the hunt for vintage items.

Why spend money at a store that has the same exact style of clothing as every other store in the mall, when you can get unique pieces of clothing at a secondhand store? People that might not want to go to a thrift store but still want a deal on something a little newer can try shopping at Plato’s Closet.

Plato’s Closet is a brand name, gently used clothing store that sells clothes for mostly teens and young adults, but the items are still name branded.

Plato’s Closet actually buys all of the clothes that they sell in the store from people. They will only take in clothes that have been sold in name brand stores within a year and are undamaged.

Although Plato’s Closet is a good store for buying name-brand things cheaper, it is not an authentic thrift store. Thrift stores like Goodwill and Volunteers of America take in all clothing for people of any age and sell what people donate to them.

Thrift stores usually have a wide variety of things to choose from because every time you walk into a thrift store you don’t know what’s going to be sold, and you never know what you are going to find.

Thrift stores are changing what they have in store every day, and going through clothes at a thrift store is actually part of why people actually enjoy thrift shopping; you get to see all of the options they are selling that day.

If you are on the hunt for a specific piece of clothing or type of clothing, chances are a thrift store will have what you are looking for.

Usually at a thrift store they will have specific categories like “women’s turtlenecks” or “men’s sweatshirts,” and at some thrift stores like Volunteers of America they have everything color-coded which makes it even easier to find exactly what you are looking for.

Another cool thing about thrifting is the excitement of finding vintage name branded items like Nike windbreakers, Adidas track pants, or even finding a good pair of Tommy Hilfiger mom jeans.

Teens today are looking for clothing that is related to the 80’s and 90’s, and the thrift store is the best place to go to find those items.

There’s plenty of people who have found really cool Nike windbreakers and have gotten many compliments about it and they get it right at a thrift store.

If you really like thrift shopping and usually find vintage pieces you can also choose to sell them on websites like Depop, because people will really spend a lot of money to get vintage items.

These are all good reasons to thrift shop but some people complain because they never find anything good and don’t know exactly how to thrift shop. The best thing to do while shopping is to check every rack in both the men’s and the women’s section, because they both have different things and some things can be worn by anybody. A lot of girls go straight to the men’s section because it’s the best place in the store to find cool t-shirts, sweatpants, crew-necks, sweatshirts, and windbreakers.

There are many benefits of thrift shopping and many reasons why it’s beneficial to people shopping on a budget. Don’t be closed minded and if you haven’t thrift shopped before, maybe it’s time to start something new.
