New Tech High freshman had a huge drug seminar where they taught their peers about the dangers of illegal and legal drugs. The freshmen had a little more than one month to do research on a drug they were assigned and to create a poster/trifold with a hand out. They had stories of people in Michigan who have misused their drug of choice on a wall as well. Those involved in the seminar feel as if it was a good idea to raise awareness to their peers as substance abuse is at a high point.

“It was quite different than many things I’ve seen in school. It’s great that we’re trying to raise awareness in drug use, especially on how high substance abuse rates are,” said New Tech freshman Chance Behrens.

Others involved think that the seminar took a long time to get through but went over smoothly. There were tons of underclassmen, and even a few upperclassmen who attended.

“The seminar went by pretty slow, but it was fun to see some of my friends and get to teach them. It’s not something I would want to do again but I guess it was kind of fun,” said New Tech freshman Nysha Fortenberry.

There were nine drugs that were being taught. Oxycodone (Oxycontin), Adderall, Alcohol, Marijuana, Methamphetamine, Heroin, Lean (Codeine), LSD, and Cocaine. The facilitators for this project were heath teacher and coach, Chad Foster and science teacher and coach, Ashley Teed.

This was a big project for the freshman as it wasn’t only open to the school, it was open to the public. Anyone could have walked in to see their showcase.
