Peanut butter drive nets nearly $10,000, supplies

On January 12, 2010, a tremendous earthquake hit Haiti leaving thousands dead and many more homeless.  It was not long before the world started to come to their aid by delivering food and supplies to help the survivors.
Everett High School responded, like other schools in the area, by having a peanut butter drive to collect jars of the creamy and nutritious treat and other items crucial to the survival of people in Haiti—and local radio station 97.5FM decided to help students out with the idea.
“It was an idea that came to us from the students at Grand Ledge High School,” said Kelly Norton, the director of Sales for the radio station. “We decided to make it really big by including any school in our listening area that wanted to participate.”
Although the drive was called “The Peanut Butter Drive,” Norton said that other items were also sent to Haiti.
“It wasn’t just peanut butter,” said Norton.  “There was a large list of specific items that they needed including other high protein foods and non-prescription medicines.”
The total amount of items collected from all the schools, competing in the drive, was 3,903.  Also, $9,874 was donated to send to the Haitian people.  The total amount of items collected from Everett was 224.  Because the need for items is so great, it took over the drive for money, but still Norton said the cash will be of much use to people who are trying to put their lives back together.
According to Norton, Potterville High School, Charlotte High School and Grand Ledge High School were the winners in their category.  The winning high schools won the opportunity to have the band We the Kings perform at their schools.
