Freshmen, sophomore class selection impact future options
A couple of weeks ago, most students chose their classes for next year. The challenge they faced was trying to get a schedule with classes they liked, along with ones they needed to graduate, all the while hoping that the classes were open and available the hour they needed them.
Many freshmen and sophomores chose classes they thought would be fun. However, some sophomores thought ahead and chose classes they know will prepare them for college.
“I picked forensic science because I like the class and would like to major in forensics at MSU,” said sophomore Jacob Venable. “I hope it will help me to prepare for college.”
Juniors had some stressful decisions to make. Lansing School District requirements include 4 years of English, 3.5 years of math and 2.5 years of history.
For juniors who did not stay on track, the choice was not easy. They had to overwhelm themselves with required classes, which sometimes required taking two classes of the same type, going to summer school or staying for another year as a junior.
For those who did stay on track, the choice was much easier. They can take multiple electives, enroll in LCC classes or retake the classes they took before to get higher grades. Some students sign up for AP classes.
AP classes are Advancement Placement classes that help students to prepare for college and also to boost their GPA beyond 4.0. For example, junior Jennifer Cayon is taking two AP classes this year and two more next year.
“It is tough but it’s worth it,” said Cayon.
While some see senior year as a chance to take some fun classes or get into a work study program, others are using their last year as a final preparation for college.
“I’m taking chemistry next year, because it is required to get into a veterinarian program,” said junior Dalila Omerovic. “I’m also taking AP European History next year to help my GPA.”
