Dropouts face lower wages, less promotions
Four hundred and fifty students started with the class of 2010 three years ago. This year, over a hundred of those students will not be walking across the Breslin stage. There are many reasons for the loss of nearly 30% of its members.
Some students drop out either because of family problems or their own personal issues. Like drugs or drama inside the school. Some students are known as the dad or mom in the family and has to take care of everything and just might not have time for school. And students that does drugs, that has a big effect on someone because all they’ll care about it drugs and smoking. They wont take the time to learn.
“I think most of drop out rates are because of family problems,” said senior Eduardo Pons.
Another problem could be transferring schools. That might not seem like a big problem but for some students it could be an issue. A person can be so used to their environment, say someone has lived their whole life in Lansing and has been going to Lansing School District schools and have so many friends that keep their focus. Changing schools can distract their learning. Depression, and stress are two main reasons.
Hill programs, students taking Hill classes and not passing can have a huge effect on their transcript. Students have to be serious taking Hill programs because if you fail, you’ve wasted your time taking that class when you could be taking a regular easy class and getting your credit.
The start of freshmen year, students are not used to the environment and can’t adapt to their surroundings as fast. Usually freshmen year, students have issues with passing classes.
“The majority of freshmen are not used to the high school environment,” said Counselor Raymond Rubio.
Freshmen year is often a struggle for many students. Many students do not realize that they can only fail two semesters of the same or different classes during their entire four years of high school.
“Most freshmen do not know about credits right when they enter high school,” said science teacher Stephanie Robinson. “You fail two classes, and then you have to pass every class you take in the future.”
Drop out rates don’t always rely on freshmen year, it doesn’t always involve with school. Some students either have problems with school, but there are personal issues that they have to take care of.
There are exactly two hundred and fifty seven seniors as of right now that are graduating.
