Cookie Cutters cut out “you”

“He who trims himself to suit everyone will soon whittle himself away.” – Raymond Hull

From what this Canadian play director stated in the early 1900’s, this quote should speak to everyone here at Everett High School and beyond. But specifically as for highschoolers, life can become pretty hectic at times because of the demand from parents, teachers and dear friends. Learning to make decisions based on what would be best is more important than depending on what someone else says about their view on the future.

For instance, the year is speeding by faster than seniors imagined it would, and college is creeping just around the corner. Some friends might be going to Michigan State, Western, or Lansing Community College. However, the ultimate choice is to find what best fits one’s own personal needs, wants and desires.

For example, it would not be a smart move to go to a best friend’s choice of college just because she/he is going there. What if the college isn’t a good fit? Could it be that fitting into the college is just to make everyone around you happy? Were all available options really explored? These are questions one should ask themselves about life, teen life, and family life.

When shaping morals and goals and future plans, follow your heart. Make choices for one’s self; do not let others choose for you. Think about the choices and their consequences. For example, it is not okay to smoke just because a friend smokes or drinks. Or just because some friends love to “party hearty” every weekend doesn’t mean it is within your character to do so. It is important to remain true to one’s self and confident in one’s abilities, because if people allow themselves to be “cookie cut” then there would be nothing left to call you . . . you.
